Local Focus A Tātau Kōrero: Isaac Hughes

Isaac was born and bred on the Coast. His love is for the East Coast and his whānau have for generations worked closely with tangata whenua. As a “Pākehā”, he never felt that, with his whānau all fluent in te reo Māori and his father teaching at the local kura kaupapa. Isaac loved the region so much that he completed his studies at EIT while working full time to pay the expenses of tertiary study. He completed his studies with no student loan debt. His hard work ethic mixed with a passion for the community has seen Isaac sitting on the Tūranganui-a-Kiwa District Council Youth Board, holding board positions on his local cricket club board and working as an auditor for Coates Associates. Isaac shares his story of growing up on the coast and some of his insights in his work.
